I could probably turn off the sound if I could get to the options menu in the game, but it doesn't load, so that's not really helpful I suppose.
and the install only lets you choose from among 5 ways of getting your sound (I have tried the game with each of the sound options-same error). I tried to go in and disable the sound, but there is not setup executable file, only the install. I've even seen people say they can play it without dosbox on XP, which of course I can't. I think what is most frustrating about this is that it appears from forum posts that many people have no problem playing this game using dosbox. Thanks for trying to help, but none of these things has worked. I have also tried adding emm=RAM to my config.NT file as someone suggested, with no effect on the error message.
mem command tells me I have "637 Kb free conventional memory. There is nothing in the autoexec portion of my config file except "mount c c:\" I downloaded several CVS builds and tried them, but I guess they don't deal with my issue.
As I stated in my original post, loadfix actually makes the problem worse in that I appear to have less memory. It immediately told me it was done installing, and I seem to recall it taking at least a few mouse clicks from me. I did run install from within Dosbox, although I will say it look funny. The version of the game I have includes the patch, so I'm good there. (And yes, I restarted Dosbox after each change, and have tried every conceivable combination of the above changes.) I am not really that technical, but I can make my way around if someone tells me what to change to fix this error. I have tried things suggested in several threads, such as making both XMS/EMS (or either one) false, changing my system to svga, and changing the memsize. I have 2800+ AMD Athlon XP Processor, 80 GB hard drive, 512 MB DDR SDRAM, Radeon 9200 video card (128 MB DDR, AGP 8x/4x), and (I think ) NVidia NForce sound card. I tried loadfix, but I get the same message with, of course, a smaller number of bytes free. Try using the Make Boot disk option from INSTALL." The error message occurs in Dosbox when I try to run the Kronodor.exe file. You do not have enough memory to run Betrayal at Krondor.
When I try to run Betrayal at Krondor, I get a message telling me: "You have 344464 bytes free. A previous thread dealing this is already extent, but as it didn't really provide a resolution, I am starting a new one.
